Derek O’Kanos is a transplant to the Green Mountain State from Connecticut’s Tobacco Valley. His music is authentic and familiar; reminiscent of the singers and seekers who came before him. Themes of love, struggle, freedom, and magic are presented with sardonic humor as Derek draws influence from: Nick Lowe, John Prine, Ben Harper, Hank Sr, Marcy Playground, Johnny Cash, Ramones, Flogging Molly, KISS, Thin Lizzy, and countless others.

Derek entered the music scene as a teenager, cutting his teeth in Punk/Metal outfits (Strange Days, Lethal Uprise). He then began to start performing his solo material, both solo and with backing groups (The Informative, The Clueless, The Wolves). There were also a few stints as a rapper (DMinor, Miscellaneous O). This allowed O’Kanos to explore a wide array of influences and develop his genre-bending style.

In 2015, he returned to his rock and roll roots with power trio O’K and the Night Crew, where he is currently active. In 2020, Derek started Oak Honest Records to release his solo material as well as the works of other artists. He’s put out two EP’s under the label On the Sleeve (2021) and Spoken Roads (2022).
